It’s officially February and I’ve got a brand new horror book to reveal to you today! Take a look at the cover for my upcoming grief/noir horror novella, VULPINE CURSE.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Acceptance is impossible: a state of being those left behind eventually stumble to through the haze of loss. For Hugh, it's something to be held at arm's-length. He can't let go of his lost husband nor his stranded daughter. So, he cycles through the first four stages of grief over and over while killing in the name of a despicable man. The apathy keeps him alive.
Everyone suffers. Why should his next targets, an unlucky brother and sister, be any different? Because there is something stirring in the fathoms of Hugh's sorrow. Waking dreams of hope and illusions of peace in a drought-ridden dystopia. But how much blood must be spilled before he can reach them? Or will the man holding his loyalty captive snuff them and him out for good?
Readers will follow one of The Deadland's beloved characters on a desperate ascent for solace in a world where no one cares for the forgotten.
So…this is a Deadlands book?
Well, not exactly and also yes. This book will not require readers to have read all three books in the Deadlands in order to enjoy it. If you have, you’ll have a deeper understanding of the character, more background on some of the things happening, and you may catch a few more Easter eggs in the text.
I want VULPINE CURSE is entirely its own thing though. I wanted to write something highly visual and deliberately apathetic, but also deeply sad. This story is about choosing not to move on, how the mind tries to cope with loss by not forgetting, by fighting acceptance with tooth and claw, how numbness and emotion wage wars with us in the midst of grief. I wanted this book to be something that those who’ve experienced grief or are currently experiencing grief can connect to without a necessary tether to the previous books.
Mostly, I love writing these characters and this setting. The world of the Deadlands offers so many opportunities and the ability to experiment with form and language. I’m very excited about this one.
